That’s when the driver selects a lower gear and releases the clutch pedal without pressing the gas pedal at all. To complete the experience, the driver will have a clutch pedal in addition to the usual brake and accelerator.ĭrivers will even be able to “downshift,” a process also known as engine braking. Since not all cars with manual transmissions are the same – they have different engines and different transmissions with different numbers of gears – the central computer would be programmed to imitate a specific sort of manual transmission car. Instead, a shifter would be connected to sensors and a central computer programmed to mimic the feel of a car with a manual transmission. In Toyota’s case, according to a patent application filed in the United States in late May, the car would have no actual multi-speed transmission. Most electric cars have only a one-speed transmission because their fast-spinning electric motors don’t need the extra help from different gear ratios at different speeds. They are more common in other parts of the world, though, including Europe. Manual transmissions, in which a driver has to press a clutch pedal and move a stick around to select different gears, are usually offered as options on performance cars or, in some cases, extremely cheap cars. A feature like this could help lure holdouts who aren’t attracted to an electric vehicle’s usual smoothness and simplicity.Įven among gasoline-powered cars, most sold in the United States today have automatic transmissions that shift gears with no driver input. That will mean finding ways to appeal to all sorts of consumers. Toyota, long skeptical of electric vehicles, has been planning a more aggressive push into the sector. It would be just for fun, an add-on for people who like shifting gears in their gasoline-powered cars. To be clear, a manual transmission on an electric car would serve absolutely no purpose. When you propagate this foolishness (that the Tesla/Leaf have no transmission) you only contribute to the spread of this ignorance. For those who find electric cars a bit boring, Toyota engineers are working on a realistic-feeling fake manual transmission as a possible feature. But I'll ask again, without any expectation of an answer "How does the fact that a transmission is single speed disqualify it from being a transmission?" Can you show me any acceptable definition of the term that includes that requirement? Are you aware that helicopters have single speed reduction gearing that is referred to as the transmission? Are you aware that my boat has single speed reduction gearing? Clearly these authors are ignorant (it's often clear from the whole article that this is the case). There are also articles in pop auto mags and on the net that explain that BEV don't have transmissions because they are single speed. Someone immediately replied that the dealer was trying to rip him off because the Leaf doesn't have a transmission. NIssan engineers, of course, refer to the transmission in the Leaf as its transmission but I do find things like the tale of the guy who posted that when he heard noises from his Leaf and took it in the dealer told him the transmission would have to be replaced. I'll have to cut you some slack here as this particular bit of ignorance is quite prevalent. Among the ignorant, i agree, there is a good chance that I would be misunderstood but then I am usually misunderstood by the ignorant in any context. service) I think even you can see that it is probably best if I refer to it by the name Tesla uses. As the most likely context would be in talking to someone at Tesla about it (e.g. Anyone who knows anything about automotive engineering would understand me if referred to the transmission in a Tesla as a transmission.
